A Global Booking Directory of Magicians by Magicians
Book a Magician - A service for you and not the platform.
In a previous post on how to get gigs, I mentioned a new service called Book a Magician, I thought I’d dig deeper into this service and look at the pros and cons. This is a post for magicians who are already working or looking to get more work. I don’t know where my readership sits on the hobbyist to professional scale, but I hope you find this bonus article interesting, nonetheless.
This post is very much brought to you by Book A Magician. Use code DAVID20 for 20% off your first year.
What Is It?
Book A Magician is an online global directory for potential clients to find, contact and book magicians in their area.
The aim of the site is to rank on the first page of Google wherever someone searches and allow them to find a good quality magician in their area. Right now, the service is new and it’s Google rank varies but Rory Adams (the creator) is working to make it the premier place with SEO optimisation and backlinking.
Being from Australia I asked how it ranked here and while it’s not high, it’s creeping up there and as more magicians come on board, it’ll only get higher.
Pros
Being featured on this site gives your own website a bump as well, through the magic of backlinks. Backlinks are basically links to your website on other websites and are only productive if they’re being linked on reputable or high-quality places. For example, this article on Book A Magician will backlink to the site, giving it a boost as long as Google sees me as decent and not a low-quality place attempting to backlink to each and every site.
So, the more magicians there are, the more backlinks are created so your own website and Book a Magician will together climb the ranks.
Outside of the yearly fee to be featured and keep the site running, any money you make from the gigs booked are all yours (and the tax mans) to keep, they don’t take a commission or referral fee.
Rory’s goal over the next 12 months is to improve SEO and basic functionality of the service, which is where you come in. Magicians on the service are able to contribute ideas on how to make the service better to the Roadmap for Rory to implement, this is very much a collaborative service that is in service of the magician.
The site just looks high quality and puts you in good company when you look at the other magicians featured there.
Cons
Book a Magician has all the same issues other similar services would encounter.
But solutions that other services don’t have.
It’s new so it will take time to gain traction in Google search results.
You are competing with other magicians in your area on the site. Although the ability to choose 3 event types that you specialise in helps to differentiate you from others (i.e. Comedy Night, College Shows, Yacht Parties!)
It’s a global database of magicians, which might not suit your needs or can feel overwhelming seeing so many magicians around. But see it as a chance to see the quality of magicians out there and where you may fit in.
It costs money to sign up yearly, which you can make back with a gig or two, but taking the upfront plunge for a new service can bring hesitation.
Here’s The Deal
